I took my two boys, ages 6 and 9, to see The Adventures of Tintin over the weekend. The movie is about Intrepid reporter Tintin and Captain Haddock who set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor. Although the movie is longer than most at 107 minutes, the kids sat like little stone statues, thoroughly engrossed. It starts off with Tintin purchasing a model ship from a market stall. He is puzzled when sinister Sakharine is so eager to buy it from him. When he refuses to sell, the villain kidnaps him. Tin Tin and his dog, Snowy, are taken on a cargo ship to Morocco. They run in to Captain Haddock here, who's crew was bribed to revolt against him. The captain explains that over 300 years ago, his ancestor hid treasure and clues are provided in 3 separate scrolls, each hidden in a model ship. Together, they team up to find the other matching ship models which contain clues to the treasure. It seems that they have half of the clues and the bad guys have the other half. As they travel by plane, camel, car and more, it is a race to see who will solve the puzzle and reach the treasure first. My favorite character was actually the dog, Snowy. He saved the day more than once. His cute looks and keen intelligence made him a joy to watch. I was slightly bothered by the captain, who was an alcoholic. There were many scenes in the movie where he drank, and his love for the bottle was no secret. Bottom line, there is a lot of reference to alcohol. If it doesn't bother you for your kids to see this then no worries. After all, the movie is rated PG. The Adventures of Tintin is a cute movie, even better than I had anticipated. Bottom line, anything that Steven Spielberg touches is going to be fantastic.
